I went to a hotel today, there was one interfaith couple who already had done their booking via oyo. When they showed their IDs at the reception the owner denied the stay to the couple clearly mentioning that they can't provide room because they are from different religions. It didn't seem that they were there just to hookup, they were looking pretty exhausted and with 2-3 bags meaning that they were not locals and visiting the city for some purpose. I'm not sure how to feel about this. What do you guys think?

Yeah. The employees are feeding you with lies left and right. My boyfriend had booked an oyo that got cancelled so they booked another one for him. Next day he reaches the hotel and surprise surprise there's no booking. There were 5-6 other people there with the same problem. All of them had booked rooms but all their bookings are suddenly denied. That particular hotel said that they have filed complaints against oyo in court.

I booked a pg on oyo life, oyo failed to make payments so they pg owner terminated contract.oyo didn't inform me, so I vacated my old pg and went to the oyo life location. Owner refuse the stay, I called the contact person oyo employee.who was the one who arranged everything before.he has quit the day before, Cause his salary wasn't getting paid for last three month. luckily I had enough money to get a contract with the owner directly. And oyo made wait 5 months before they refunded me my money

I just kept calling them, I just assumed since they are not going bankrupt(they keep raising money).That I would eventually get my money back,and I did. Tbh After 3 months,I almost wrote it off as a loss.but thank fully i got it back

One of the reasons "locals" book hotels is for prostitution related activities.
So hotels generally just avoid the risk of being caught in the middle of that as prostitution between 2 parties in general is legal but being a 3rd party involved between prostitution is highly illegal in India.

Obviously terrible but I'm not surprised. I am Indian, used to be married to a white guy and it happened to us fairly regularly that cheaper hotels didn't want to give us a room when we showed up. One time I asked for an explanation and the receptionist basically told me they don't allow prostitution in their respectable establishment (this is a cheap hotel in Paharganj!!!). They didn't even look at our IDs, they saw one Indian one white and decided it must be prostitution because what else could it be? Mind you I was dressed in Indian clothes, not even jeans etc. My practical suggestion to people in a similar situation is to either book Airbnb (entire unit where the owners aren't there) or a more expensive upmarket hotel, but not everyone can afford those options.

You can totally visit! My ex husband and I spent several months together in India and it was totally fine, apart from a few annoying things like this. Like I said, the solution to this particular problem is to go to a more expensive hotel - they never ask questions - or an Airbnb, especially if the owner isn't even there or they don't mind. We also rented apartments together for a few months and it was fine, we explained we were married, there were no real issues. Obviously you get the usual stuff like people staring, trying to take pictures etc, especially in North India. I'd say if you go, if she has not been to India before, warn her beforehand that people will stare at her and try to take her picture. It's inevitable so it's better to be prepared.

It's been long I used one but oyos used to mention if they accept unmarried couples or not in their tnc, was never denied a booking but yeah the service can be shitty in many ways.

Although that may be true but there is fineprint on this. I don't know the Indian penal code but it is illegal to deny service based on race, color, religion, nationality where I live. I'm assuming India is similar.

Happened to me a while ago. First 2 hotels we went to refused and I had to give 50rs extra to the third hotel. Surprisingly oyo kept giving us better rooms in the new hotel everytime a hotel owner refused us to check in.

The incident mentioned in the post is one of the many similar things that made us live abroad despite our deep longing for India. The extremists in India make me feel that it will never be a safe place for me or my children born from an interfaith marriage.

look at it from the hotel's perspective. they dont know who you are. they probably deal with dozens of couples looking to hook up. some of them are genuine couples.. many of them are transaction based couples. there is no way for the hotel to tell who is who.. if there is a raid on the hotel or some political disturbance they will be out of business in a matter of minutes..
there is no easy answer...
