Is it better to buy a cheap new car or an older high-end car?

AA cheap new car will last a very long time, if you buy one of the makes and models with a reputation for durability. There are lots of them out there.
Depending on what you mean by “ an older high end car” you can get one for as little as one tenth to one fourth the price of a cheap new car, say for example you can buy an an old Lexus for two thousand to five thousand bucks in great condition, but ten or fifteen years old with a lot of miles on it. A new “cheap “ car will cost you at least about fifteen thousand in the USA.
If you really need a VERY dependable car and plan on driving it a lot of miles every year for years to come, the new car will be cheaper to own and drive, over the long term.
But if you choose well, and don’t need to put a lot of miles on your car day after day, and can afford to be without it once in a while, that old Lexus is going to be far more comfortable, and almost for sure far cheaper to own and run as well.
Nice older cars that have been well maintained are likely to give you excellent service……. IF you have a GOOD mechanic help you check the car out thoroughly before buying it and you buy one of the makes and models noted for lasting a long time.
I drive an old Buick, a 1997 LeSabre with almost three hundred thousand miles on it, and I have averaged spending less than a thousand dollars a year on it, total, for repairs and maintenance for the last five years, including new tires as needed. It was considered a nice car back in its day, but obviously not a luxury car.
A wise man once told me to buy the most car you can afford.
Many years ago I bought an E34 (5 series) 1995 BMW for myself and a W124 (E Class) Mercedes for my wife. Both were bought certified pre-owned at a dealership in the Chicago west suburbs. It is a slightly affluent area with lots of used trade-ins with low miles. Both cars were fast, solid, luxurious, attractive and dependable transportation.
I recall putting the then 8 year old BMW in the shop and renting a new Pontiac. Another advantage is there are many independent shops that specialize in imports out of warranty, saving you $$$ over the dealership service.
I would buy either of these 30 year old cars today, drop a couple thousand dollars in them for maintenance/repairs and confidently drive the wheels off.
“Better” needs to be defined, but if we define it as reliable low-cost transportation, buying a cheap new car is better than buying an older high-end car.
I know, I’ve done both. I’ve owned two older Volvos as well as a couple of older Mercedes. One of the older Volvos was terrible, but the other was quite nice. Both Mercedes were good, though I liked one better than the other. There’s a nice, solid feel to high-end cars, plus they’re really cool. However, they’re not even cheap to buy when they’re older, and the cost of repairs is high. Also, older cars need to be repaired a lot. My last Mercedes mechanic, whose phone number I had on speed dial and whose mortgage I was paying, even advised me to sell it and buy a more practical car. When your mechanic tells you this, you might want to listen.
I owned the Volvos initially, and after selling the second one, I bought a new Yugo, then the cheapest car in the US. People laughed at my Yugo, but hey, it ran fine. I drove it trouble-free for 2–3 years and then sold it for a couple thousand dollars less than I paid. That’s pretty cheap transportation.
After selling my second Mercedes, I bought the cheapest new Chevrolet then sold. It was even cheaper for me because I had accumulated points on a GM credit card. Did I like that Chevrolet? No. But it too ran trouble-free for 2–3 years, after which I sold it for $3000 less than I paid. Again, that was cheap transportation.
So I think it depends on what you want which is better. If you’re not dependent on a car and handy with tools, a high-end older car is a fun way to go. But if you need 100% reliable transportation and aren’t that handy with tools, a cheap new car is better.
It depends on exact model but overall cheaper new one is better if you really plan to drive a car a lot.
For example a new Audi A8 is $120,000 and new Lada is $5,000.
A 2007 Lada still worth $2,000 and has 10 years of life left in it.
A 2007 A8 is $1,800 and a single serious malfunction before the scrap yard.
In general - it depends, how “thin” your pocket is.
New affordable, small Toyota, Honda or other car with proven durability could cost equivalent of 4-5 years old prestige sedan or SUV.
With new car you have warranty for 3 or more years and can sleep well, not troubling of malfucntions, but you of course are "The average one", no so-called prestige or many usefull (or not) car features.
With old, but prestige - of cours you can make an impression, feel comfort and use many excelent gadgets, but have to remember about the cost.
Simple example: in Poland you can buy 10 y.o. Porshe Cayenne with approx 400hp engine for about 50000 PLN (approx 12500 USD).
First hard day may come, whet you will need to replace brake disks and brake pads. Original ceramic ones (set for front wheels only) can cost 20.000 PLN (5000 USD) and tehre are very few non-original aftermarket replacements parts. Bigger problem appears; problem with spareparts for reasonable money and problem with qualiffied not authorised mechanics.
So - if you decide to buy something classy - be sure, taht you will be abble to afford cost of regular maintenance and potential repairs.
I've bought high end used cars for years. I buy them cheap and either run them into the ground or sell cheap.
My last two were a Jaguar XJ8 which cost me an unbelievable £75 British pounds and only needed a set of tyres. A stunning car.
After that I bought a Mercedes S320 which was classed as a limousine. It still had the receipt in the glove box…69K euros 10 years earlier. I paid £1000 for it, one of the most luxurious cars ever. Sold it to a relative and it's still going strong.
I'm now in a Toyota Land cruiser which is 12 years old and drives like new. What it costs in minor maintenance is nothing compared to the monthly payments on a new car.
It depends on what “high-end” means.
Don’t buy an older Bentley or Rolls as parts will be insanely expensive and few mechanics know how to fix them. Same goes for Jaguars.
Along the same lines, an old Mercedes, Audi, or BMW will be expensive to service, particularly if you (or previous owners) aren’t strictly following the maintenance schedule. Old Mercedes diesels - in particular - can last forever, but you still need someone who knows how to fix it.
Old Lexus (Lexi?) and Acuras are pretty easy to get repaired, as they use mostly Toyota or Honda parts, and any decent Japanese car mechanic can fix them. And they’ll run forever if they’re decently maintained.
Probably the biggest thing in favor of the “cheap new car” is it would have modern safety systems and electronics. A 20 year old car won’t have Bluetooth mobile phone integration, on-board GPS, backup cameras, blind-spot radar, etc. Even “cheap” new cars will have at least some of these.
Around 25 years ago a friends uncle, who was around 55yo, needed a new car that would last ‘his remaining days’.
His budget allowed for a new Toyota Corolla.
Although it was a good reliable model, he wanted a rear wheel drive. He also realised that like most new cars, Asian models in particular, once they hit around 250,000 kilometers they need to be replaced.
The uncle loved his old rust free HT Holden Premier 253ci V8 but it needed an overhaul. He got talking to a friend of his who was a mechanic, who pointed out that for the price of a new Corolla he could overhaul his old Holden.
Mates lent a hand to strip the car down and prepare the car for a respray. The drive-train from the motor to the diff was rebuilt with upgrades.
The interior was replaced.
Once the rebuild was complete, the car was better than brand new.
The last I heard the uncle, who must be close to 80yo by now, is still driving the car which has been well maintained.
The uncle saved money doing a lot of the work himself and receiving trade price through friends but one can buy similar rebuilt cars for much less than what was spent on the rebuild.
If I was in need of a new car and could afford the price, that’s exactly what I would do, buy an older model car that has been rebuilt from scratch.
From a purely financial standpoint, I’d buy a 3-year old off lease low end car. It’s taken the depreciation hit for the first three years and is probably in good shape. Get one still under warranty if you can
but then you have to drive it and if you want to enjoy yourself a low-end car isn’t going to tickle the fancy of a lot of people.
But high end cars, even after they’re lower in price, always have high end repair bills. As an example: I recently had to replace a front wheel drive axle on my BMW. I can buy those axles all day long at the local auto parts store for a Honda or Chevrolet for $50. The one for the BMW was over $300. and I did the work myself but a BMW mechanic will charge you more than a Chevrolet mechanic because, well, you own a BMW.
Second hand expensive cars like Mercedes and BMW are cheap to buy but expensive to run and repair, plus in the UK you have to have it MOT each year. If you buy a new car it is less likely to breakdown, be more fuel efficient, be cheaper to repair and no MOT. It's a no-brainer to go for a new cheap car. If you want to look like you have money don't buy a 10 year old Mercedes or BMW it has the opposite affect.
It depends. Regardless of your situation, you want good value retention.
For the longest time, I was leasing cheap new cars. I did this because the cheaper cars have greater demand, which gives buoyancy to their used value, and that helps trim down car ownership costs for me. For about $7,000, I drove a brand new Prius for three years—not including insurance, of course.
Now that I have money saved and some invested, I’m anticipating a switch to something a bit more luxurious. Maybe not exactly luxurious, but I’m going to have an actual choice in what I want to drive for the first time. However, I’m still looking for the same thing: Good value retention.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the high-end car needs to be used or new. If the monthly payment is right, you could actually save a bit of money leasing. If the dealer won’t move on the monthly lease payment, consider looking to finance it at a low rate. I say finance instead of flat-out purchase because the opportunity cost of throwing $60,000-$100,000 at a steel tube with four tires is generally massive. Minimizing that cost of ownership generally involved financing a high-end car that’s about a year or two old and then selling it after a year or two of ownership afterward.

It’s better to buy a used midrange car.
High-end cars have expensive maintenance, especially as they get older.
Cheap cars don’t tend to last very long, even if you get them new, and you still pay a premium for buying new.
The best cost-benefit is on a midrange car that’s been well maintained, several years old so it’s depreciated but not so old that major maintenance will be needed soon. You get to drive a nicer car, but you don’t have to pay as much for the priviledge.
Keep in mind that with larger cars and SUVs, the lifetime fuel cost will exceed the cost of the car, especially if you buy used.
The best choice is almost always a 2–3 year old Japanese-make car with not more than 30k miles on it. With no options. I have bought several cars matching this descxtion for myself and everyone else in my family, with very good results.
Why 30k miles? Because even if the previous owner never did any maintenance, (s)he probably couldn’t have significantly damaged the car in that duration. (Change the oil, first thing, just to be sure.) And, it’s totally possible to find cars with that small amount of mileage on them selling for half the cost of a new one.
Why no options? Because the options are always the first thing to break unexpectedly on any car. My current car is an RX-8, which has a well-earned reputation as the most troublesome Japanese car. It’s 16 years old. I have had it for 10 years, and never yet had more than one unexpected (i.e., other than normal maintenance) trip to the mechanic per year.
Our favorite make is Mazda: they depreciate faster than Honda and Toyota and last almost as long, and are much more fun to drive, if you like to drive. Even the cheap ones. (If you don’t like to drive, you might, after driving a Mazda for a while.)
Buying a high end used car is always a great decision rather than to buy a cheap new car. This is depend on different aspects and conditions. As we all know, if anyone bought a high end used car without checking its condition then it would cost a lot to his pocket. On the other side, buying a new car, whether its cheap or costly, it’ll never gave you any kind or issue or you never have to take a check while buying,
These are some checks which you have to do before buying a high end used car.
On the First step, First thing have to check while buying a new car is its papers. Because if you checked out the car condition and you likes it and after that you found some problems in papers. That means you have wasted your time and efforts. So first check all the papers - Registration Certificate, Insurance and Pollution Emission Certificate
Check Body:- On the second step, Do have a look of compete body of the car and identify minor, major scratches, repainted panels and found out whether the car ever had any accident or not.
Check Mechanical parts:- On the third step, Take a test drive of the car as per your daily drive and identify, if there are any odd sound is coming from engine or having rattle noise and do check the suspension, AC, acceleration and braking also.
Check Electrical Parts:- On the fourth and final step, Check all the electrical parts like - Headlamps, Tail lamps, Instrument cluster, infotainment system, sunroof, speakers, power windows, ORVMs, IRVM, wipers, defoggers, Remote key or push start-stop button and other ones.
After completing all the steps, then move to finalize the cost to buy. If you found out the cost is high as per your analyzing then do point out the things you found to reduce the cost and to get a cheap deal.
Hope this will help you in anyway.
Well it depends on how old.
You might save a few bucks buying a 2–3 year old used vehicle; but your gambling the money saved by the cost in repairs; which will be more than the money you saved.
There is no meaningful comparisons between a cheap new car and a used car more than a few years old because, the risk to benefit ratio is far worse than 2–3 years old vehicle.
It’s cheaper, easier, and more convenient to buy a cheap new car.
Cars are not an investment, they are sacrificial machines with the intended purpose of transportation.
