If India was smart they would GIVE Tesla free land to build the factory. That might entice them to put in an India Gigafactory. They are so heavily populated that it can only be a win.

Most of singapore investment to india got screwed by india goverment. Besides, income per capita is low. Not a good market or trustable partner there.

Indian government must not use shield of EV launching to cover up its failures in reducing traffic jams, reducing wastage of fuel, and not putting control on population.

Elon is correct, high import tariffs ignores the reality "India doesn't make everything". Tesla already has invested in parts suppliers all over the world, so there is no logical reason to build the same parts factories again so they can assemble cars in India. Economists have been warning India for years, heavy handed import tariffs can lead to a stagnant manufacturing sector.

They can require a plan to fully auto - make the cars in india, but right now what is gonna buildup their electrical infurstructure, the answer is electrical cars. Thus india needs to pemit him, to first- initiate building electrical cars else were, importing to india, without a tarrif. This will in a few year, pemit companies to rise up, with charging stations, and by next 1 or so years, then the factory will be fully ready to build in india, and supply for india. But they cannot do it in the order they are setting. it is gonna hurt the indian people. Thus, he needs to be able to import from other factories, for a few years. This, will massivly buildup their ev station value, and be ready for indian manufactured teslas. To have a factory built, and eve stations - Because you cannot import, will create a bottle neck for the consumer, Indian consumer, and will make progress and quality for the Indian people deteriate. Thus, india is not wrong about what it wants, but in a newly developed field, they need to give a 5 year margin- adaptaion - to buildup this new industry, before stipulating it's maunfactoring inside the country itself. thus, india and elon are not wrong. It just means they need to re-set the order of thing. #1. india gets electric cars, from imports, without tariff, for 1-3 years. This will make value for upcoming ev stations, builtup the marketing for esla vehicles, as he begins the manufacturing setup, for build in and Manufactured, only in india- Simply put - india needs to realize it is going overboard to protect somthing it does not have, thus should permit a 1-3 year period, for the market to be built up - and thus result in indian manufactoring boom, then it should proceed to further protect the newly built industry, but they need to let elon do he's magic, and actually build a market first, if india Really wants, the best outcome for it's people.

And a lot of the elite are politicians, they would cut their own throat, if Indian vehicle manufacturers can't keep up with technology or change for the benefit of the planet then that's India's problem.
That country is too overpopulated for its own good, that's why they immigrate, to make room for more deformed and idiot people that worship cows instead of eating them.

But Indians already have EVs made within their own country alongside a huge investment of supply chain systems set up by Indian manufacturers. Giving Tesla free market access is like shooting your own foot.
